The Careers Office is situated on the 2nd floor between the maths and science departments. Mrs Merson (Head of Careers) is available for students and parent meetings Monday to Thursday, Mrs Bev Ashby is available on Wednesdays, please contact Mrs Merson to make an appointment; cmerson@harrogatehighschool.co.uk or 01423 548800 ext 239 / 554081.

Our vision centres on developing promising young people into achieving, happy, effective and responsible adults. As such, we feel that it is essential that our Careers Education Advice and guidance (CEIAG) starts from Year 7.  This is made possible by careers themed lessons across the school, a half termly VMG (pastoral programme) with a careers focus, ongoing careers meetings, enterprise events, widening participation and STEM opportunities and subject taster lessons to support students in making informed decisions about their choices at KS4 and KS5. At Harrogate High School this provision falls under the umbrella of ‘Shaping My Future’.

A comprehensive programme of Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) is offered to all students at Harrogate High School; with particular emphasis from Year 8 – Year 13.

Year 8

Year 8 students will have the opportunity to attend the KS4 Options Evening in January where they will receive an introductory talk on what GCSE options are available to commence KS4 study in Year 9; they can then visit the subjects’ event and speak to teaching staff about the course content, type of qualification (BTEC, GCSE or Enrichment) and make a decision as to which three options they would like to study.

All students will have an individual conversation with Mrs Merson (Head of Careers) to confirm choices and their suitability for each individual student.

Year 9

Students may visit the Careers Department for an informal ‘drop in’ session or have a formal Careers meeting on request, Parents and Carers are very welcome to attend.

Year 10

Students may visit the Careers Department for an informal ‘drop in’ session or have a formal Careers meeting on request, Parents and Carers are very welcome to attend.

Year 11

Year 11 is a really important year where big decisions have to be made regarding post 16 education (it is now compulsory for all young people to remain in full time education or training or part time education or training combined with either employment for 20 hours or more a week or volunteering for 20 hours or more per week until their 18th birthday; this can be at school, college, or an apprenticeship). All students in Year 11 will receive an individual Careers interview with Mrs Merson; this can help students make the right decisions for the pathway they wish to follow in further or higher education, apprenticeship or training programme.  Help and advice will be given regarding A level options, applications to college or apprenticeships.
