Literacy Project Launch

w/c 10th June 2024

This year we are running a literacy project that will help students engage in text and prepare for their English curriculum in September. All students will be loaned a copy of the book Wonder by R J Palacio and provided with a booklet in which they can complete tasks. This booklet can be returned to their English teacher in September.

We will request that all data collection forms are returned to us by this date so as to allow us to update our school systems ready for September.

Transition Days

8th, 9th and 10th July 2024

We are inviting all of our new students into school to share in a three day experience of secondary school. This will involve lots of exciting activities and opportunities to meet with key members of staff. Students will get the opportunity to experience different learning environments and start to familiarise themselves with their new surroundings. NB. These days will be dependent on Government guidelines at the time and more information will be provided in due course.

Student Q & A with the Headteacher

Thursday 11th July 2024

Following on from the transition days, students will be bursting with questions about the coming year. Therefore, we will host a live online Q&A session via Microsoft Teams so that all students have the opportunity to join and to find out everything they need to feel ready for September.

Year 7 SLT Link Live

Thursday 22nd August 2024

We know that the Summer can be a long time away from school and for some students this can build nervousness and apprehension. Therefore, just before the new term commences, all students will be invited to a live meeting with their year group Senior Leader who will go through the plans and logistics for the new term. They will answer any questions and support with first day anxiety.

Transition arrangements

SEND Information Sharing

During the summer term, the Inclusion team meet with SENDCOs from each primary school. During each meeting, SENDCOs will share information with our team and highlight effective teaching and learning strategies that are specific to each child with an identified need. SENDCOs may also share the information of health care professionals involved with your family so as to ensure a successful and effective transition to Harrogate High School in September. If you feel that your child may need further support during transition, or throughout their time with us at Harrogate High School, please make your child's SENDCO aware who will then share this information with us.

Primary visits from key members of staff

Before the transition days, each member of SLT will visit each primary school. The purpose of this visit is to introduce a friendly face and allow time for specific questions that students may have. We will also deliver copies of the book Wonder by R. J. Palacio along with a summer activity sheet, which will be an area of focus on the return to school in September. Transition visits take place close to the time of the transition days to ensure that students have sufficient time to ask specific questions and feel comfortable in understanding the daily routine at Harrogate High School before they join us on the transition days.

Essential Equipment

Students must bring their own bag (that should fit an A4 folder) and pencil case which should include a minimum of; a pen, pencil, ruler and rubber. Students should also bring a basic geometry/maths set including protractor, ruler, compass and set square. A scientific calculator is also required (e.g. Casio FX-85GTX GCSE).
