Curriculum Intent

A music scholar will have a love of all music. They will be confident, resilient performers who embrace all challenge. They will have a clear understanding of how music has developed through time and can articulate what they are listening to or playing through an extensive use of musical vocabulary. We aim to help students develop a love of music and their talents as a musician and increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. The music department’s foundation is that music is for all regardless of gender, race, or ability. We aim to build success into every lesson and extend curricular opportunities for every student.

How Music Links to our CARES Values

In Music, pupils have the opportunity to:

How Music Links to our British Values

We will work hard in music to promote strong British values that inform students attitudes and behaviours on a lesson by lesson, but also longer-term basis.

Individual Liberty - In Music we express ourselves through the music we play, create and listen to. We develop music in our own style and are encouraged to use our own creativity. We are assessed on our individual creative approach to work.

Mutual Respect - In Music we respect the opinions of our classmates. We respect and celebrate the creativity and talents of those around us. We value the respect we are shown by others.

Key Stage 3 Overview

KS3 (Yr 7, 8 & 9) – Curriculum Content

All students study music at Key Stage 3 as part of their curriculum and many engage in other activities outside of the classroom. Approximately 35% of students have instrumental lessons alongside the curriculum. Students receive an hour of music in Year 7, 8 and 9 once a week.

Course title: KS3 Music

Course Overview: At Key Stage 3, music is about providing opportunity to learn new skills and enjoy the subject. We intend to provide every student with the opportunity to learn at their own pace and develop their skills as a musician through listening, composition and performance.

Sequenced knowledge is a key part of our teaching and the natural steps we take through learning music reflect those that are used in the learning of a musical instrument. Our units relate closely to each other and progress from one to the next by building on prior knowledge and expanding on key concepts.

Progression to: GCSE Music

Key Stage 4 Overview

Course title: GCSE Music

Course Overview: Our GCSE brings theory, listening and composition to life in new and engaging ways, and links to the world around us. We know that every student has different learning styles and musical tastes, which is why our GCSE values all music styles, skills and instruments.


Key Areas of Study:

  • Component 1 – Listening
  • Component 2 – Performing
  • Component 3 - Composing


  • Component 1 – Listening (written exam at the end of the two-year course)
  • Component 2 – Performing (performance exam at the end of the two-year course)
  • Component 3 – Composing (2 compositions completed as controlled assessment over the two years)

Course Length: 2 years 


Extra-Curricular Activities

  • Tuesday – Choir
  • Wednesday – School of Rock and String Group
  • Thursday – Jazz Band
  • Friday – Orchestra

Trips and Events

If in an extra-curricular group, you will take part in a number of concerts in school and in the wider area. Examples are:

  • Jazz Band performing at the Yorkshire Show
  • Jazz Band performing at the Autumn and Spring Flower Show
  • Foreign tours with Choir and Jazz Band – for example, Barcelona, Paris, Croatia, and Tuscany most recently
  • Outdoor activity residential to Low Mill rewards trip for all music students
  • Harrogate Christmas Market with Choir
  • Visits to orchestral concerts with all year groups
  • GCSE trip to The Beatles Museum
  • Primary School Music Tour with various groups
  • Music for Youth Festival with Choir
  • The Big Sing with KS3
